Redstart

Our other staff members play an integral part in Redstart:

Daniel (“Rudi”) Ruddell: Dan received a Bachelor’s degree from Dartmouth College in 1981 and Master’s (pending thesis) from Antioch New England in Conservation Biology, where his thesis includes a GIS-based assessment of butternut (Juglans cinerea L.) health in relation to site calcium levels in Vermont. Dan’s background includes extensive tree planting experience along with coursework in wetlands, hydrology, natural resource inventory methods, and ecological research methods. Dan has led field crews on stream geomorphic assessments in central Vermont and a silvicultural inventory of the Mt. Tom Forest at Marsh-Billings-Rockefeller National Historical Park, and his work encompasses analysis and compilation of field data to inform decision-making. He maintains a keen interest in the integration of ecosystem and community health, and lives with his family in a house built from home-grown wood in Tunbridge, Vermont where he grows vegetables and makes maple syrup with his neighbors. He has technical proficiency in GIS (ArcView 3.x and 9.x); MS Word, Excel, Access; JMP statistics; and NED-1 and NED-2 forestry software.

Mike Scott: graduated from the University of Vermont in 2007 with a Bachelor's of Science Degree in Forestry and a concentration in Forest Management. During his college years, Mike worked as a biological technician for the US Park Service at the Marsh Billings Rockefeller National Historic Park with Redstart Forestry to complete a silvicultural inventory of the park, and served as an intern for the Chittenden County Forester, Mike Snyder. He was the president of student SAF (Society of American Foresters), ran cross country for UVM for four year and was the captain of the team his senior year. For additional forestry experience, Mike also worked at planting trees, cutting firewood, and implementing timber stand improvement projects. In 2007, Mike started working for Redstart Forestry in Corinth, Vermont. In addition to private consulting, Mike has worked as logger in eastern Orange County and has completed Game of Logging levels 1-3. He enjoys wiffleball, fishing, and agriculture and is a new resident of South Washington, Vermont.
